Crisis Management/Debriefings

A crisis is described as anything that has a negative impact on an organization or work group. Considerations might be:
  • Death of an individual
  • A serious accident in or outside the workplace
  • Downsizing, reduction in force (or the rumor of one)
Just as no two crises are alike, Southwest EAP has a number of different response options to meet the needs of your organizations at this difficult time.
  • 24/7 consultation and support services
  • On-site critical incident debriefing
  • On-site grief and loss counseling
  • Downsizing support
  • Follow-up, both telephonic and face-to-face
24/7 Consultation and Support Services - Southwest EAP is available 24/7 to assist companies who have experienced a traumatic event. Our trained clinicians will assist you in determining what types of services will be most appropriate, the extent of services needed and scheduling times and places. We will also provide assistance in identifying those who may be in need of help and provide some helpful resources for management and supervisors on how to communicate and respond to those affected.

On-site Critical Incident Debriefing - Critical Incident Stress Debriefing or CISD involves a meeting between individuals or groups and a trained counselor who can encourage the employees to talk about the effect of the incident on them, both individually and as a workgroup. This has proven helpful in minimizing the effect of related symptoms and long-term impact of the trauma. The counselor can also remain available to meet with individual employees in a more intimate setting.

On-site Grief and Loss Counseling - The death of a co-worker, family member or friend can be debilitating. Bereavement counselors can provide on-site support for individuals and groups. Individuals are educated on the grief process, develop an understanding of the length of recovery and are encouraged to express their feelings. This service can also be extended to the family of the employee.

Downsizing Support - Downsizing is one of the most stressful periods any organization undergoes. No one is immune. Human resources personnel, managers, supervisors, employees being laid off and those who remain are all affected by the situation. Southwest EAP can provide assistance to individuals at all the different levels. We provide pre-planning and consultation to HR, supervisors and managers, conduct individual or group sessions for those employees who were let go and support for those employees who will remain. We can assess the need for further training and support to combat the morale problems that organizations often struggle with following downsizing.

Follow-up, both telephonic and face-to-face - For those individuals who are identified as being "at risk" or who request further assistance, Southwest EAP can continue to provide support and/or treatment through our EAP program, the company's EAP, or another provider. Arrangements can be made for long-term follow-up around the holidays or anniversary of the event.
